Health Benefits of Grass Reared Beef

Tuesday 29th of July 2008

Summary of the health benefits of grass reared beef when compared to cereal reared animals

Grass fed beef is significantly healthier than cereal fed beef.

This might surprise some people but it is a scientific fact that the same animal if raised under different feeding conditions will have a significantly different fat composition.

The reason for this is that cereals are rich in omega-6 fatty acids. There is now strong evidence that omega-6s can make cancer cells grow faster and more invasive. For example if you were to inject a colony of rats with human cancer cells and then put some of the rats on a corn oil diet, some on a butterfat diet, and some on a beef fat diet, the ones given the omega-6-rich corn oil would be afflicted with larger and more aggressive tumours. If the beef animals are eating these potentially cancer-promoting fats from the cereals then it follows that humans consuming this beef will be ingesting similar amounts of these detrimental fats.

Grasses however contain significantly less omega-6s but do contain a number of fatty acids that pass on beneficial health benefits to animals that consume them.
.
The most significant fatty acids available in grass fed beef are omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoelic acid (CLA) .

Pasture fed cattle will have 30-40% more CLA in their meat than cereal finished cattle. In multiple research studies CLA has been shown to both reduce the incidence of cancer and suppress the growth of existing cancers in laboratory animals. Further animal studies have correlated CLA with decreasing body fat and increasing lean body mass and CLA has been shown to delay the onset of diabetes and aid the battle against coronary heart disease.

Omega-3s are very important to our bodies. Our hearts require omega-3s to stabilize their rhythm and keep blood clots from forming. Our brain cells require omega-3s to build flexible, receptor rich membranes. Our immune systems use omega-3s and CLA to help fend off cancer.
A high level of omega-3s in the diet may also lower risk of many modern diseases including cardiovascular disease, depression, ADHD, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and autoimmune diseases.

Another fatty acid, stearic acid, is the most abundant fat in beef. Unlike some other saturated fats, stearic acid does not raise your bad cholesterol and it may even give your good cholesterol a little boost

Grass fed beef also contains up to four times more Vitamin E than cereal finished beef. In humans, vitamin E is linked with a lower risk of heart disease and cancer. This potent antioxidant may also have anti-aging properties.

Furthermore grass fed beef is lower in total fat and calories than feedlot beef making it more suitable for the vast majority of the population living a sedentary lifestyle.
